Yes, that was my last Momo night. You don't know what Momos are? Ignorant people are so tiring... Momo is the national Tibetan dish: some kind of steamed Chinese dumpling, vegetarian, or with cheese, or with meat. It's a tradition to have Momo night on Wednesdays, and I never missed it, because it's so good (they innovated here by creating a sauce with tomatoes and herbs, and... peanut-butter. As some of you know, I am really not a fan of peanut butter, but this turned out to be extremely tasty!). Since I am leaving in 2 days, this was my last Momo night. Here a sample:
It's time for an assessment of my stay in IBA. This year, it has been extremely positive. I have finished translating three chapters of the Treasury of Logic of Sakya Pandita, the project I have with IBA, including checking the first chapter with a Khenpo. For my dissertation, I have worked through many Indian and Tibetan authors and have managed to finally ground my understanding of the structure of the Abhisamayālaṃkāra, the Ornament of Realizations, and I was able to observe the differences of interpretation between authors of the same tradition. This will prove to be extremely useful and interesting to report in my dissertation, and I expect to become rich and famous through it (well, maybe... what am I writing about again? Oh yes, something that is going to be read by 2 people in the world). I improved in Tibetan (and even in Nepali!), read some other things on the side. In brief, for once, I can be satisfy with my work.
The key of this success has been obviously the people who have helped me, and especially my teacher, the Venerable Khenrab Woeser, whose patience, sense of precision, sweetness, and generosity has very little equivalent. How fortunate I have been to meet such people on the way! The other factor has been the extremely structured articulation of the day here, which helped me to concentrate and work efficiently. I will replicate this at home as I can, and I think this will be greatly helpful.
As always, I am both sad and happy to leave: I am sad to leave this lovely country, these attaching people, but I am happy to come back home (and cook! and have wine and cocktails!), but happy also to come back loaded with those precious teachings, emotions, understanding (yes, loaded with understanding). Thanks to those, I feel I can be the bridge I aim to be. May they carry me until the next time! Because of course, there will be a next time.
Yesterday, the sky was playing with the clouds and the light. Here are some attempts, that reproduce so poorly the magic of that moment:
