Saturday Night Fever

What's best than going to the concert on Saturday night? Well, not any kind of concert, but a concert of classical Indian music at the Pashupatinath Temple of Kathmandu, the temple of the Lord of the Pashus, Shiva himself.

In fact, today was a big day: they did not offer concert because it was saturday, but because it was the 15th day of the lunar month, so a very important day. For the Buddhists also it is important, not only because it is black moon (the day monks recite the traditional prayer of confession), but also because today was precsiely the birthday of the Karmapa, a very important religious figure. That's why this morning, the whereabouts of the stupa were pretty crowded. Here 2 views:

This afternoon, I went to the Pashupatinath temple for the first time, even though it is a very important place here in Kathmandu: people go there to rest, to eat, to worship, to meet a date... I was there with 4 friends, and the music was so good that we stayed until night. It was just magical to be entertained with divine music in a divine abode. It actually took place at the Kirateshvar Sangitashram, the pavilion of Shiva lord of the Kiratas, the people of the mountains. You can actually see behind the artists Shiva dancing. Some people prefer Vishnu to Shiva, but you have to say, he is a pretty good dancer. And today, he was certainly listening, he could not have diverted himself from such tasteful musical offerings! First two women performed playing tablas, a rather rare situation I would think since generally men play tablas, and then we had the privilege to hear the god-like voice of Chandi Prasad Kafle who, as all good classical Indian singer, sang about love:

"I love a fake, I am broken now..."

A moment of pure happiness. I am going to bed with this melody in my head. I am definitely buying CDs.

Of course, monkeys have their home in the park of the temple.
